Domestic Violence A Threat Faced By Women - 1936 Words
CHAPTER ONE 1.1 INTRODUCTION Domestic violence is a threat faced by women all over the world. It is an epidemic affecting individuals in every community, regardless of age, economic status, race, religion, nationality or educational background. In Nigeria, women experience violence mostly from their male counterparts. According to findings from the National Violence against Women Survey, one in every four women will experience domestic violence in her lifetime. Domestic violence and abuse is still a ââ¬Ëhiddenââ¬â¢ issue in our society as people believe that it is the private matters of the family and therefore should remain in the private sphere. A culture of silence reinforces the stigma attached to the victim rather than condemning the perpetrator of such crimes (afrolNews, 2007). Women keep quiet about being violated and the cycle of violence still continues because nothing is being done about it. Laws have been made to criminalize the act in the international scene but these laws have not been incorporated as domestic laws in Nigeria.
